About Rainy River Resort
We are a 'mom & pop' run campground, who had no intentions of starting an RV Campground!
40 years ago while in our early 20s, we purchased this property for our retirement home. After taking early retirements from our careers in government and insurance, we moved to our place in Northern Michigan. Down State relatives and our grandkids, found our place in Onaway a popular place to visit. Our house being small and our relatives having travel trailers and motorhomes, we started to develop a couple of gravel pads for them to park. As the grandkids grew up, we purchased a used travel trailer and fixed it up for them to stay in. We also put in a natural putting green for our guests to play around on and to give Gary some exercise in maintaining it (a lot of work). As time changes, so do vacation plans and the relatives and grandkids don't come as often and some have quit coming altogether. So rather than let the grass grow over and our previous efforts go to waste, we decided to rent out our spaces to the general public. We read in Motor Home and Trailer Life Magazines that many people were looking for something other than an Up Scale resort to park their rigs, so we decided to upgrade our camping pads to 30 amp service and do some remodeling to the 24 ft. Camping Trailer and see if people really were interested in "no frills" camping.
How did we choose the name. Our house sits on a little trout stream called the Rainy River. One of our visiting relatives said, "You guys have your own little resort here, why would you ever want to go anywhere else?"
So we became known as the resort and on the internet we are Rainy River Resort, Northern Michigan's smallest and least expensive RV Campground.
